Pacific 2017 & Paper about Hybrid Propulsion Systems

From 3rd to 5th of October, the MAN 175D high speed naval genset solution was presented at Pacific 2017 in Sydney, which is the most important international maritime exposition in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region, attended by all the global leaders in the commercial maritime and naval defense sectors.

Latest developments in propulsion technology were thoroughly discussed with a special highlight on hybrid solutions. Using this opportunity, Pierpaolo Da Fieno, Navy Application Engineer for the MAN 175D high speed engine, presented a paper entitled "Mission-centric design of hybrid propulsion systems for multi-purpose naval vessels". To effectively tackle the new operational challenges naval vessels are currently facing with their equipment, propulsion systems have to provide an exceptional level of flexibility and capability. The MAN design approach to naval hybrid propulsion plant is based on a critical synergy of MAN 175D high speed engines, controllable-pitch propellers, power electronics and batteries.

The presentation of the paper was very well received and sparked many fruitful discussions and exchanges of ideas by several important operators and shipyards. Furthermore, MAN Diesel & Turbo received a great deal of positive feedback and a lot of interest regarding the MAN 175D Genset exhibit and the interactive “moving screen” display on the booth.
